USU Gymnastics Just Misses Season High Monday In Match-Up With No. 1 Utah

LOGAN, Utah - It was a night of second-bests for Utah State gymnastics Monday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, as the Aggies posted their second-best score of the season, matching No. 1-ranked Utah, which has the second-best floor average in the country, on the event with a 48.925. Overall, the Aggies posted a 193.500, just .1 off their season-best, while the top-ranked Utes were right on their nation-leading average with a 196.950.

USU’s 48.925 on floor was its season-best on the apparatus, continuing to top its season-best in each of the six meets thus far. The Aggies had their second-best score of the season on bars with a 48.825, while their 48.200 on vault and 47.550 on beam were their third-best scores of the year in the respective events. The 193.500 team total was .1 shy of the season-best 193.600 set at Boise State on Jan. 30.

The Utes tallied their 196.950 with a 48.925 on floor, a 49.300 vault score, a 49.350 on beam, and a bars score of 48.375.

Utah’s All-American Kristina Baskett swept all four individual titles in winning the all-around with a 39.675, leading a 1-2-3 finish by the Utes in the all-around. USU junior Heather Heinrich was fourth with a 38.350 while sophomore Lyndsie Boone and senior Nicki Felley tied for fifth with a 38.050.

Sophomore Jackie Dillon, Heinrich and redshirt-freshman Erica Huelsmann were USU’s highest individual finishers, all tallying 9.825’s on floor to finish in a three-way tie for third. Dillon tied her season-high while Huelsmann set a new personal-best.

Sophomore Nicole Simoneau matched her teammates by tying for third on bars with a 9.875, just short of her career-best of 9.900 and tallying her 18th score of 9.800 or higher in 20 career meets. Freshman Brandie Dickson tied her career-best with a 9.775, finishing sixth.

The Aggies opened the meet on vault with a 48.200, as freshman Rebecca Holliday led off with a 9.550, followed by a 9.475 from Simoneau then an 8.975 from Felley. Sophomore Lyndsie Boone tallied a 9.650 before Heinrich notched a 9.725 and Dillon completed the rotation with a 9.800, finishing fifth. The Utes logged their 49.375 on bars to take a 1.175 lead after the first rotation.

Swapping apparatus, USU moved to bars while UU went to vault. Boone started things off with a 9.650, followed by a 9.700 from Felley and a 9.725 by Heinrich. Dickson then notched her 9.775, followed by Dillon’s 9.750 and then Simoneau’s top team score of 9.875. The Utes stuck a 49.300 on vault and led, 98.675-97.025 at the meet’s half way point.

For the third rotation, the Aggies were on beam, where they improved significantly from Friday’s performance. After Heinrich scored a 9.075, Felley nailed a 9.625, before Boone tallied a 9.050, then freshman Haley Hogan posted a 9.375. Holliday registered a 9.775 and Simoneau scored a 9.725, giving USU a 47.550 on beam. UU scored a 48.925 on floor, as it came into Monday’s meet with the second-best floor average in the country at 49.185, and the Utes had a 147.600-144.575 advantage after three.

In the final rotation, USU was on floor where the Aggies matched the Utes’ 48.925, notching their five team score contributions of 9.700 or higher. Boone led off at 9.700, followed by a 9.600 by Hogan. Dillon, Huelsmann and Heinrich all then scored their 9.825 in respective order before Felley closed things with a 9.750. The Utes scored a 49.350 on beam to secure the win.

After an 11-day layoff, Utah State resumes action and its in-state foe battles, traveling to Provo, Utah on Friday, Feb. 20 for a quad-meet hosted by BYU as well as Boise State and San Jose State. The Boise State and San Jose State marks will count towards USU’s Western Athletic Conference record. USU then heads to Sacramento, Calif., on Feb. 27 for a tri-meet with Sacramento State and Boise State, before returning home on March 6, hosting Pittsburgh.
