BOISE, Idaho - Utah State track and field teams began the 2009 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships with the multi events Thursday. Senior John Strang leads the men's heptathlon after day one of action with 3,180 points., while sophomore Sonia Grabowska finished seventh in the women's pentathlon.

In the heptathlon, Strang won the high jump, clearing 6-11.00 (2.11m) as well as winning the long jump with a 23-09.50 (7.25m) mark. Strang also took second in the 60m clocking in at 7.05 and took seventh in the shot put with a distance of 35-06.00 (10.82m).

Freshman Jon Goble took third in both the 60m (7.19) and the high jump (6-06.25) as well as seventh in the long jump (21-01.25) and shot put (35-06.00). Goble is in seventh-place after day one with 2,857 pts.

In the women's pentathlon, Grabowska finished in seventh place overall. She finished fourth in both the 60m with a 9.14 time and the long jump (17-10.25), which was also a new season best. Grabowska placed eighth in the high jump clearing 4-09.75 (1.47m) and 11th in the shot put with a distance of 32-00.25 (10.82m). Finishing out the pentathlon, Grabowska took 12th in the 800m clocking in at 2:41.97.

Sophomore Maria Halton also competed in the pentathlon but did not finish. She took seventh in the 60m (9.41) and 15th in the shot put (26-10.50). Halton also tied for ninth in the long jump (17-00.50) but did not score in the high jump or 800m.

The heptathlon will continue Friday at 11 a.m. with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and finish with the 1,000m. The other individual events will also begin Friday at 1:30 p.m.
