Twenty Utah State University employees were notified Monday that they would be laid off from their jobs.

The layoffs were part of $6.5 million in budget cuts the university made last October, and were not part of $5.65 million in budget cuts that will be addressed by a university-wide furlough next week, university spokesman John DeVilbiss told KVNU.

DeVilbiss said he didn't know which departments were affected by the layoffs, and BrandE Faupell, head of USU's Human Resources, was unavailable Tuesday afternoon to comment.

There are no additional layoffs planned between now and July, DeVilbiss said, but beyond that, it's too early to tell. With $18 to $30 million in potential cuts expected next year, the university is considering additional furloughs, layoffs and program reducations, but DeVilbiss said "It just really depends on what those numbers are."

The university won't know those numbers until March 12, when the Legislature wraps up its current session.
